Langzeitdrainage

Langzeitdrainage refers to a medical procedure involving the insertion of a tube or catheter to drain fluid that has accumulated in a body cavity or organ. This fluid can be blood, pus, serous fluid, or other abnormal collections. The term "Langzeitdrainage" indicates that the drainage is intended to be in place for an extended period, often weeks or months, to manage chronic fluid buildup or to allow for continuous healing.

The procedure is typically performed when conservative treatments are insufficient or when there is a risk of infection or further complications from the fluid accumulation. Common indications include post-operative fluid collections, abscesses, ascites (fluid in the abdomen), pleural effusions (fluid around the lungs), and hydrocephalus (excess fluid in the brain). Once in place, the drainage tube is connected to a collection bag. The amount and character of the drained fluid are closely monitored by healthcare professionals. Regular cleaning and care of the drainage site are crucial to prevent infection.
