Langila

Langila is a stratovolcano located in the Morobe Province of Papua New Guinea. It is part of the Bismarck Volcanic Arc, a chain of volcanoes that stretches across the island. The volcano is situated on the northeastern coast of New Guinea, about 15 kilometers inland from the Vitiaz Strait. Langila is a complex volcano, consisting of several cones that have erupted at different times.

The recorded history of Langila's activity is relatively short, with its first significant eruption documented in 1916. Since then, it has been a persistently active volcano. Eruptions are typically characterized by Strombolian activity, which involves the ejection of incandescent volcanic bombs and ash. Lava flows have also been observed. The volcanic products include basaltic and andesitic lavas, as well as ash and scoria.

The local population lives in close proximity to Langila, making it a volcano of interest for hazard assessment. While most of its eruptions have been moderate, the potential for larger events exists. Monitoring efforts are in place to track its activity and provide warnings to nearby communities. The surrounding area is covered in dense tropical rainforest, which can be impacted by ashfall and lava flows during eruptions.
