Landguard

Landguard is a coastal locality at the western end of Felixstowe in Suffolk, England. It lies at Landguard Point where the North Sea meets the River Orwell, and forms part of the broader Felixstowe coastline. The area is best known for Landguard Fort, a historic defensive work that sits on the headland and dominates the coastline.

Landguard Fort was constructed in the late 17th century as part of England’s network of coastal defenses designed to protect the estuary and the approaches to Ipswich. It represents the development of artillery fortifications during the early modern period, with subsequent additions and alterations in the 18th and 19th centuries to keep pace with evolving military technology. The fort remained in use through several decades of military history and was eventually decommissioned, after which it opened to the public as a heritage site.
