Landgebruiksdata (land use data) refers to information describing how land areas are utilized, managed, and covered. It combines land use classifications, land cover data, and geographic attributes to portray the function and physical state of the landscape at a given time and location. The data typically integrates both the intended use of land and the actual surface material present.

Typical components include land use categories (housing, agriculture, industry, recreation), land cover (forests, cropland, water, impervious surfaces), parcel boundaries, zoning regulations, transportation networks, and environmental features such as soils and hydrology. Data may also capture temporal changes, enabling analyses of urban growth, deforestation, or seasonal agricultural practices.

Data sources and collection methods vary. They include remote sensing from satellites (for example Landsat or Sentinel), aerial photography, LiDAR, field surveys, and cadastral or administrative records. Datasets are produced at different cadences and resolutions, ranging from monthly updates to yearly cycles and from sub-meter to tens-of-meter spatial detail. Harmonization efforts seek to align disparate data into comparable formats across regions and time.

Standards and interoperability are supported by land use and land cover classifications (such as FAO LCCS or CORINE), metadata standards, and common coordinate reference systems. Open formats like GeoTIFF, Shapefile, and GeoJSON facilitate sharing, while EU initiatives like INSPIRE promote harmonized datasets across member states.

Applications span urban planning and zoning, agricultural management, forestry, environmental monitoring, climate adaptation, and disaster risk assessment. Access and governance considerations include licensing, open data portals, and privacy or security constraints for sensitive information. Ongoing challenges include definitional consistency, data currency, accuracy validation, and gaps in coverage.
