Lamiastrum

Lamiastrum is a genus of flowering plants in the family Lamiaceae, commonly known as deadnettles. There are currently two recognized species within this genus: Lamiastrum galeobdolon and Lamiastrum album. These plants are native to Europe and Asia and are often found in woodland, hedgerows, and disturbed ground.

Lamiastrum galeobdolon, commonly called yellow archangel or yellow deadnettle, is characterized by its bright yellow flowers that bloom in late spring and summer. It typically grows as a creeping perennial, forming mats of foliage. The leaves are ovate to heart-shaped and often have serrated margins. Lamiastrum album, also known as white deadnettle, features white flowers that appear from spring to autumn. It is an upright perennial with similar leaf morphology to Lamiastrum galeobdolon.

Both species are important nectar sources for various insects, including bees and butterflies. They are also known for their resilience and ability to thrive in partial shade. While Lamiastrum album is generally considered a non-invasive native plant, Lamiastrum galeobdolon, particularly its variegated cultivars, can be quite vigorous and sometimes invasive in garden settings due to its rapid spread. The genus name Lamiastrum is derived from the Greek word "lamium," referring to a related genus of deadnettles.
