Lambsare

Lambsare is a small village situated in the county of Northumberland, England. The village lies approximately six miles east of the market town of Alnwick and is positioned on the north bank of the River Aln, which has historically provided a means of transport and irrigation for the surrounding agricultural lands. The soil in the area is predominantly limestone loam, which supports a mix of arable farming and pasture, and the surrounding hills are dotted with scattered woodlands composed mainly of oak and ash.

The earliest documented reference to Lambsare appears in the Domesday Book of 1086, where it is recorded as "Lammesure", a settlement of modest size under the lordship of the Bishop of Durham. Over the centuries the village grew modestly, with its social and economic life revolving around the local manor house and the parish church dedicated to Saint Margaret. In the 19th century the arrival of the Aln Valley Railway, now closed, briefly increased trade and population. The local economy has remained largely agricultural, with an emphasis on sheep breeding and dairy farming, a tradition that gives the village its name.

According to the 2011 UK Census, beyond the rural population of approximately 350 inhabitants, Lambsare is characterized by a high proportion of older residents, with 18% aged 65 and above, and a low level of employment outside the primary sector. The community maintains a primary school, a village hall, and a small pub that serves as a social hub. Lambsare's heritage is celebrated through an annual lambing festival, which showcases local crafts, produce, and traditional music. The village remains a quiet example of rural English life, balancing pastoral practices with the modest modern amenities afforded by its proximity to larger market towns.
