Lalfabetització

Lalfabetització, also known as functional illiteracy, refers to the inability of an individual to perform basic reading, writing, and arithmetic tasks despite having completed formal education. This condition is distinct from traditional illiteracy, which is the inability to read and write at all. Lalfabetització is often associated with individuals who have completed primary education but struggle with more complex tasks, such as understanding and interpreting written information, solving mathematical problems, or filling out forms.

The term "lalfabetització" was coined by Brazilian educator Paulo Freire in his 1968 book "Pedagogy of the Oppressed." Freire argued that traditional education systems often fail to address the cultural and social contexts of their students, leading to a form of illiteracy that is not merely about the inability to read and write but also about the inability to critically engage with the world.

Lalfabetització can have significant social and economic implications. Individuals who are lalfabetitzats may face barriers to employment, as many jobs require basic literacy skills. They may also struggle with accessing essential services, such as healthcare, and may be more vulnerable to exploitation and abuse.

Addressing lalfabetització requires a multifaceted approach that goes beyond simply teaching reading, writing, and arithmetic. It involves understanding the cultural and social contexts of the individuals being educated and providing them with the tools and support they need to engage critically with the world. This may include addressing issues such as poverty, discrimination, and lack of access to education.
