Laklösningsmedel, or paint thinners, are solvents used to thin paint, dilute varnishes, or clean brushes and other painting equipment. They are typically composed of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as mineral spirits, turpentine, or synthetic hydrocarbons like xylene and toluene, depending on the specific application and desired evaporation rate.

In construction, automotive, and artistic contexts, laklösningsmedel allow for the appropriate flow and spread of oil-based paints, reduce drying time, and remove paint residues from tools. Acrylic or water-based paints are largely solvents‑free, but quick‑tint and gloss finishes still often require a small amount of ethanol or propylene glycol to adjust viscosity and drying characteristics.
