Laitteistopalomuurit, or "firewalls" in English, are network security systems designed to monitor and control incoming and outgoing network traffic based on predetermined security rules. They act as a barrier between a trusted internal network and untrusted external networks, such as the internet. Firewalls can be implemented in hardware, software, or a combination of both, and they operate at various levels of the network stack, from the application layer down to the network layer.

There are several types of firewalls, each with its own strengths and weaknesses. Packet-filtering firewalls examine individual packets and allow or block them based on criteria such as source and destination IP addresses, protocols, and port numbers. Stateful inspection firewalls, on the other hand, keep track of active connections and use this information to make decisions about incoming and outgoing packets. Application-layer firewalls, or proxy firewalls, operate at the application layer and can filter traffic based on the specific rules of the application being used.

Firewalls are an essential component of network security, helping to protect against unauthorized access, malware, and other threats. They can be used to enforce security policies, such as restricting access to certain websites or blocking specific types of traffic. However, firewalls are not a silver bullet for network security, and they should be used in conjunction with other security measures, such as intrusion detection and prevention systems, antivirus software, and regular security audits.
