Lairun is a city-state and major port on the southern coast of the fictional continent of Valoria. It serves as a regional center for trade, governance, and culture, with a history shaped by seafaring, guild networks, and urban administration.

Geography and climate: The city occupies a crescent harbor shielded by limestone headlands. The Aurel River runs through western districts before emptying into the harbor. The climate is temperate, with mild winters and warm summers, supporting a diverse urban ecosystem.

History: Lairun traces its origins to the mid-12th century, when a fishing village grew into a trading town connected by inland routes and sea lanes. It built fortifications and harbor facilities and acquired autonomous city-state status in the early modern era, maintaining political independence amid shifting regional powers.

Government: Lairun is governed by a Mayor and a 42-member City Assembly elected for four-year terms. The Assembly enacts laws, approves budgets, and oversees departments such as security, transport, and culture. A rotating executive cabinet implements policy.

Economy and culture: The economy centers on maritime trade, fish processing, shipbuilding, light manufacturing, and services. The Moon Market and harbor trade sustain crafts and gastronomy. The population is multilingual, with Lairunish and the Common Tongue, and diverse cultural traditions reflected in festivals and daily life.

Institutions and landmarks: Notable institutions include the Grand Library, which preserves regional archives, and Lairun University, founded in the 19th century to study navigation, maritime history, and regional studies. A surviving landmark is the Harbor Gate, a remnant of the city walls.
