Laimennusjäädytyslaitteet, or dilution refrigerators in English, are specialized cryogenic devices designed to achieve extremely low temperatures, often below 1 Kelvin and approaching absolute zero. They operate on the principle of lambda point cooling, which is a phase transition of helium-4 at 2.17 Kelvin. At this point, helium-4 transitions from a normal liquid (He I) to a superfluid state (He II) with unique thermal properties.

The core of a dilution refrigerator involves a mixture of two isotopes of helium: helium-3 and helium-4. This mixture is circulated through a series of stages, each progressively colder than the last. The key component is the "still," where helium-3 is heated and vaporized, then condensed and flowed into the mixing chamber. In the mixing chamber, the helium-3 preferentially moves into the helium-4 rich phase, a process that absorbs heat and thus cools the chamber.

Dilution refrigerators are crucial for scientific research requiring ultra-low temperatures. Applications include studies in condensed matter physics, quantum computing, and the operation of sensitive detectors for astrophysics and particle physics. These devices are complex and require careful engineering to maintain the precise conditions needed for their operation. Their ability to reach such extreme cold makes them indispensable tools for exploring fundamental physics and developing new technologies.
