Lahjendisse

Lahjendisse is a Finnish term that translates to "diluted" or "attenuated." It is most commonly used in the context of biological and medical research, particularly when referring to microorganisms, viruses, or vaccines.

In microbiology, a lahjendisse culture refers to a preparation where the number of viable microorganisms has been intentionally reduced. This is often done through serial dilution, a process of progressively decreasing the concentration of the microorganisms in a liquid medium. Dilution is a crucial step in many microbiological techniques, such as plating for colony counting, antibiotic susceptibility testing, and the isolation of pure cultures. By diluting a sample, researchers can obtain isolated colonies that grow from a single cell, allowing for identification and further study.

The concept of lahjendisse also applies to vaccines.
