LagosBadagry

LagosBadagry is a coastal region in Lagos State, Nigeria, centered on the town of Badagry and its surrounding communities. Located along the Atlantic coast in the western part of the Lagos metropolitan area, the area combines residential neighborhoods with commercial and fishing activities and features a shoreline and lagoon systems that shape its land use.

Historically, Badagry played a significant role in the transatlantic slave trade, with the Badagry Slave Port functioning as a key embarkation site for enslaved Africans. The area preserves a number of heritage sites and museums that document this history and the broader interactions between local communities and European traders dating back to the 15th–17th centuries. The cultural landscape reflects Yoruba and other regional influences that have shaped local traditions and crafts.

In modern times, LagosBadagry’s economy centers on fishing, agriculture, small-scale trade, and services related to tourism and transport. The Lagos-Badagry Expressway provides a major corridor linking Badagry to Lagos city and access toward the Seme border with Benin Republic, supporting regional commerce. Plans and discussions around the Badagry Deep Sea Port and related rail or road upgrades feature prominently in infrastructure development efforts for the area and the state.

Tourism and culture play a growing role, with historic ports, beaches, and cultural sites drawing visitors, alongside local markets and community events. The region continues to evolve as Lagos State expands its urban and economic footprint while preserving its historical heritage and coastal environment.
