Labeotropheus

Labeotropheus is a genus of cichlid fish endemic to Lake Malawi in Africa. These fish are popular among aquarium hobbyists due to their vibrant colors and interesting behaviors. The genus currently contains two recognized species: Labeotropheus trewavasae and Labeotropheus fuelleborni. Both species are characterized by their elongated, laterally compressed bodies and their distinctive upturned mouths, which are adapted for scraping algae from rocks.

Labeotropheus species are herbivores, feeding primarily on aufwuchs, which is a layer of algae and invertebrates found on submerged surfaces. In their natural habitat, they inhabit rocky areas of the lake, often in shallow water. They are known for their territorial nature and are often kept in specialized African cichlid aquariums. Breeding in captivity is common, with females being mouthbrooders, carrying their eggs and newly hatched fry in their mouths for protection.

Labeotropheus trewavasae is often distinguished by its more streamlined body shape and a greater variety of color morphs, which can include red, orange, and blue variations. Labeotropheus fuelleborni tends to be more robust and is commonly found in shades of gray, blue, and orange. Both species are important components of the Lake Malawi ecosystem and are a subject of ongoing research regarding their evolution and adaptation within the lake.
