Laatoitukseen

Laatoitukseen is a Finnish term used in construction to refer to tiling work—the process of installing tiles on floors, walls, or ceilings to create a durable, water-resistant surface. The related noun laatoitus denotes tiling as a finished trade, and laatoitukseen is the illative form used to indicate the purpose or direction of tiling, for example in work orders or instructions.

Materials used in laatoitukseen include various tile types such as ceramic, porcelain, glass, quarry, and natural stone. Substrates may be concrete, cement backer boards, plaster, or drywall, depending on location and load. Adhesives range from standard cementitious mortars to flexible or rapid-setting formulations, sometimes called liima in Finnish. Grout, available in cementitious, epoxy, or prism variants, fills the joints between tiles. In wet areas, waterproofing membranes or sealants are often installed before tiling, and some stones require sealing after installation.

The tiling process typically begins with layout planning and surface preparation to ensure a flat, clean, and dry substrate. Tiles are measured and cut as needed, usually with a tile cutter or wet saw. Adhesive is spread with a notched trowel, tiles are placed, and spacers are used to maintain even joints and alignment. After the adhesive cures, grout is applied with a float, excess material is removed, and the surface is cleaned. Porous or sensitive materials may require sealing after grouting or finishing.

Quality and safety considerations include proper substrate preparation, moisture management, control of movement with expansion joints, and appropriate tile selection for the area. Proper maintenance and periodic sealing where required help preserve the surface, while compliance with local building standards supports long-term performance.
