LOTOlukitus

LOTOlukitus is a method used in industrial and workplace safety to ensure that machinery is safely shut off and de-energized before maintenance or repair work is performed. The term LOTO is an acronym for Lockout/Tagout, and "lukitus" is the Finnish word for locking or securing. Thus, LOTOlukitus specifically refers to the application of lockout and tagout procedures within a Finnish context or by Finnish entities.

The core principle of LOTOlukitus is to prevent unexpected energization of equipment, which could lead to serious injury or death. This is achieved by physically isolating energy sources, such as electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, or pneumatic power. Once the energy source is isolated, a lock is applied to the isolating device to prevent it from being re-energized. A tag is then attached to the lock, clearly identifying the worker who applied it and the reason for the lockout.

The procedure typically involves several steps. First, the affected employees are notified of the impending LOTOlukitus. Then, the equipment is shut down in a normal manner. The energy source is isolated and locked out, and a tag is affixed. After lockout, any stored energy is dissipated or restrained. Finally, the equipment is tested to ensure that it is indeed de-energized before work begins.

Upon completion of the maintenance or repair, the LOTOlukitus is removed. This involves ensuring that all tools and personnel are removed from the work area, and that any guards or other safety devices have been reinstalled. The worker who applied the lock and tag is responsible for its removal. If multiple workers are involved, specific procedures are followed to ensure all locks are removed before re-energization. Compliance with LOTOlukitus procedures is crucial for maintaining a safe working environment.
