LIVESTRONG

Livestrong, officially the Livestrong Foundation, is an American nonprofit organization dedicated to helping people affected by cancer and other serious illnesses through survivorship services, education, advocacy, and practical support. Based in Austin, Texas, it was founded in 1997 by cyclist Lance Armstrong and a group of supporters following Armstrong’s cancer diagnosis.

The foundation’s mission focuses on cancer survivorship—addressing physical, emotional, and financial challenges faced by patients and families. It provides information resources, patient navigation, and assistance programs, and it collaborates with healthcare providers, community groups, and researchers to expand access to care and survivorship services. Funds are raised through donations, corporate partnerships, and fundraising events, with a public emphasis on empowering people to live with and beyond cancer.

The Livestrong brand popularized the yellow wristband, introduced in 2004 to raise awareness and support for cancer survivors. The organization’s visibility and fundraising were significantly affected by the Lance Armstrong doping scandal in 2012, leading to governance changes and a renewed focus on mission-driven work.

Among its ongoing initiatives is the LIVESTRONG at the YMCA program, a collaboration with YMCA associations to provide a structured, evidence-based physical activity program for cancer survivors. Livestrong continues to operate with a focus on survivorship, advocacy, education, and support for patients and their families.
