LEDflitsen

LEDflitsen is a term used in Dutch to denote the rapid flashing or strobing of light emitted by light-emitting diode (LED) sources. The word blends LED with flitsen, meaning flashes, and is used to describe both deliberate light patterns and unintended flicker in LED lighting systems.

LEDflitsen occurs when the brightness of an LED is modulated on and off at high speed. This can be intentional, for signaling, decoration, or visual effects, often achieved with pulse-width modulation (PWM) or dedicated dimming electronics. It can also arise as an artifact of power supplies, dimmers, or drivers that introduce periodic current variation or ripple.

Common characteristics include the modulation frequency (measured in hertz), the duty cycle, and the waveform. At low frequencies flicker is readily perceived as visible flashes, while at high frequencies the flicker may be imperceptible to the eye but can still have physiological effects, especially in sensitive individuals or with moving subjects. Some LED products aim for high-frequency operation to minimize visibility of flicker, while certain applications purposefully use low-frequency flashing for signaling or artistic effect.

Safety and regulation: Visible flicker can cause discomfort, headaches, or in rare cases seizures among people with photosensitivity. Many jurisdictions impose requirements to limit flicker in consumer lighting and electronic devices. Designers address LEDflitsen through stable drivers, higher-frequency modulation, and quality control to reduce unwanted flicker.
