LDO regulatorer, which stands for Low Dropout regulators, are a type of linear voltage regulator. They are designed to maintain a constant output voltage despite changes in the input voltage or the load current. The key characteristic of an LDO is its low dropout voltage, which is the minimum difference between the input and output voltages required for the regulator to function correctly. This low dropout voltage allows LDOs to operate even when the input voltage is only slightly higher than the desired output voltage, making them ideal for battery-powered devices and applications where power efficiency is critical.

LDO regulators achieve voltage regulation by using a pass element, typically a MOSFET or a bipolar transistor, which acts as a variable resistor in series with the load. A feedback loop compares the output voltage to a stable internal reference voltage. If the output voltage deviates, the feedback loop adjusts the conductivity of the pass element to bring the output voltage back to the desired level. This process results in a stable and regulated output voltage.

Compared to switching regulators, LDOs offer advantages such as lower noise and ripple on the output voltage, simpler design, and fewer external components. However, they are generally less efficient, especially when there is a significant difference between the input and output voltages, as the excess voltage is dissipated as heat. Despite this, their low noise and simplicity make them a popular choice for sensitive analog circuits, microcontrollers, and other applications requiring a clean and stable power supply.
