LACNIC

LACNIC, the Latin American and Caribbean Network Information Center, is the regional Internet registry (RIR) responsible for allocating and registering Internet number resources in Latin America and the Caribbean. It is a nonprofit organization that manages the distribution of IPv4 and IPv6 address space as well as autonomous system numbers (ASNs) for its service region, and it also operates the WHOIS and related registration services that document resource ownership and status.

As part of its operations, LACNIC provides resources to Internet operators, service providers, researchers, and other organizations within its territory. It supports reverse DNS delegation and maintains registration data that underpins routing and network management. LACNIC operates within a global framework overseen by ICANN and the Number Resource Organization (NRO), and collaborates with the other RIRs to coordinate policy and resource distribution.

Policy development in the LACNIC region is community-driven. The registry conducts open policy forums, regional meetings, and public consultations where stakeholders can propose and discuss changes to how resources are allocated and managed. Approved regional policies align with broader, global policy frameworks established by the ICANN community and the NRO.

In addition to resource distribution, LACNIC engages in capacity-building, training, and outreach to promote IPv6 adoption, robust routing practices, and sustainable Internet infrastructure. It also collaborates with governments, educational institutions, industry, and civil society to support Internet growth and access across Latin America and the Caribbean.

Headquartered in Montevideo, Uruguay, LACNIC serves a diverse set of countries in its region and participates in global Internet governance through its roles within ICANN and the NRO.
