L3välimuisti, also known as L3 cache or Level 3 cache, is a component of a computer's central processing unit (CPU) that serves as a buffer memory. It is larger and slower than L1 and L2 caches, but significantly faster than main system RAM. The primary function of L3 cache is to reduce the average time it takes for the CPU to access frequently used data.

Unlike L1 and L2 caches, which are typically dedicated to individual CPU cores, L3 cache is often shared among all cores on a processor. This shared nature allows multiple cores to access the same data without needing to retrieve it from the slower main memory, improving overall system performance, especially in multi-threaded applications.

The size of L3 cache varies widely depending on the CPU model and its intended purpose. Higher-end processors generally feature larger L3 caches to accommodate more data and instructions, leading to better performance in demanding tasks such as gaming, video editing, and complex simulations.

The speed at which L3 cache can be accessed is measured in nanoseconds. While slower than L1 and L2 caches, its larger capacity often compensates for the speed difference by reducing the frequency of accesses to main memory. The effectiveness of L3 cache is highly dependent on the specific workload and how well the data accessed by the CPU fits within its capacity.
