L1välimuisti, also known as Level 1 cache, is a crucial component within a computer's central processing unit (CPU). It is the smallest and fastest type of cache memory, located directly on the CPU chip. Its primary purpose is to store frequently accessed data and instructions, allowing the CPU to retrieve them much faster than if it had to access main memory (RAM). This speed difference is significant, as cache memory operates at speeds closer to the CPU's core clock speed.

The L1 cache is typically divided into two parts: the L1 instruction cache and the L1 data cache. The instruction cache holds instructions that the CPU is likely to execute next, while the data cache stores data that the CPU is actively working with. This separation helps to avoid conflicts and further optimizes performance.

The size of the L1 cache is relatively small, usually measured in kilobytes (KB), often ranging from 32KB to 128KB per core. Despite its small size, its proximity to the CPU and high speed make it incredibly effective in reducing latency. When the CPU needs data or an instruction, it first checks the L1 cache. If the required item is found (a "cache hit"), it is retrieved almost instantaneously. If it is not found (a "cache miss"), the CPU must then check the next level of cache (L2), and if still not found, access main memory, which is a much slower operation. Therefore, a high L1 cache hit rate is essential for overall system performance.
