Lämpösuihkutus, also known as thermal spraying, is a group of coating processes in which finely divided metallic or non-metallic materials are deposited in a molten or semi-molten condition to form a protective or functional coating. The coating material is typically in powder or wire form. This material is heated and accelerated towards a substrate, where it rapidly cools and solidifies, forming a cohesive layer.

Various energy sources can be used to heat the coating material. Common methods include combustion flames (e.g., acetylene, propane), electric arcs, and plasma. The choice of energy source and spray material depends on the desired coating properties and the substrate material. For instance, plasma spraying is often used for high-temperature applications and for spraying ceramics. Arc spraying is suitable for metallic coatings. Flame spraying is a more basic and economical method.

Thermal spray coatings offer a wide range of benefits. They can provide excellent wear resistance, corrosion protection, thermal insulation, electrical conductivity or insulation, and can be used to repair worn or damaged parts. The process can be applied to a variety of substrates, including metals, ceramics, and composites, and can coat complex shapes. The thickness of the coatings can vary from a few micrometers to several millimeters.
