Lämmönkasvu, a Finnish term often translated as "heat growth" or "thermal expansion," refers to the phenomenon where materials increase in volume when their temperature rises. Conversely, they contract when cooled. This change in size is a fundamental physical property of matter and is dependent on the material's composition and temperature range.

The extent of heat growth is quantified by the coefficient of thermal expansion, a material-specific constant. Different materials exhibit varying degrees of expansion. For instance, metals generally expand more than ceramics or glass. This property is crucial in engineering and construction. A mercury thermometer works based on this principle, as the mercury expands and rises in the capillary tube with increasing temperature. Heated metal objects can become slightly larger, and when they cool, they return to their original size.
