Lämmönkäsittely, often translated as heat treatment, refers to a variety of industrial and metallurgical processes that involve heating and cooling materials. These processes are employed to alter the physical and mechanical properties of materials, such as metals, ceramics, and polymers. The primary goals of heat treatment include improving hardness, increasing toughness, relieving internal stresses, enhancing machinability, or modifying microstructure.

Common heat treatment processes include annealing, which softens a material and reduces internal stresses by heating it to a specific temperature and then cooling it slowly. Hardening involves heating a material to a critical temperature and then rapidly cooling it, typically in a quenching medium like water or oil, to increase its hardness. Tempering is a subsequent process to hardening, where the material is reheated to a lower temperature to reduce brittleness and improve toughness. Normalizing involves heating a material to a temperature above its critical point and then cooling it in still air, producing a more uniform microstructure.

Surface hardening techniques, such as carburizing and nitriding, are used to create a hard outer layer on a component while keeping the core relatively soft and tough. These treatments are crucial in manufacturing for improving wear resistance and extending the service life of parts subjected to friction and abrasion. The specific temperature, duration, and cooling rate used in each heat treatment process are critical factors that determine the final properties of the material. Understanding and controlling these parameters is essential for achieving the desired material characteristics for specific applications.
