Läänkö

Läänkö is a Finnish term that historically referred to a man, often of noble or wealthy background, who owned or managed a large estate or manor. The concept is closely tied to the agrarian society and the feudal structures that existed in Finland, particularly during the Swedish and Russian periods. A läänkö would typically possess significant land, resources, and often wield considerable influence within their local community and beyond.

The role of a läänkö was multifaceted. They were agricultural entrepreneurs, responsible for the productivity of their lands, the welfare of their tenants and laborers, and the collection of dues or taxes. Beyond their economic responsibilities, läännö were often expected to fulfill civic duties, such as participating in local administration, contributing to defense, or acting as arbitrators in disputes.
