Külmutuslaed

Külmutuslaed, also known as chilled ceilings or cool ceilings, are a type of radiant heating and cooling system that provides thermal comfort by circulating chilled water through a network of pipes installed in the ceiling. This system works by absorbing heat from the room, thereby cooling the space.

Unlike forced-air systems that blow air, chilled ceilings offer a silent and draft-free method of cooling. The temperature of the ceiling surface is maintained slightly above the dew point to prevent condensation. This is typically achieved by using a sophisticated control system that monitors humidity levels and adjusts the chilled water temperature accordingly.

The primary components of a külmutuslaed system include the ceiling panels, a network of PEX or copper pipes, a chiller unit that cools the water, and a pump that circulates the water. The panels can be made of various materials, often metal or gypsum, with integrated pipes.

The benefits of chilled ceilings include energy efficiency, as they can be more efficient than traditional air conditioning, especially in applications where the primary need is cooling. They also contribute to improved indoor air quality by avoiding the re-circulation of air and potential contaminants associated with fan-based systems. However, the initial installation cost can be higher than conventional systems, and careful design is required to manage humidity effectively.
