Külmkapist

Külmkapist is the Estonian word for refrigerator or fridge. It refers to a household appliance used for storing food at low temperatures to prevent spoilage. A typical külmkapist consists of an insulated compartment and a heat pump that transfers heat from the inside of the compartment to its external environment. This cooling system allows for the preservation of perishable items such as dairy products, meats, fruits, and vegetables, significantly extending their shelf life.

Modern külmkapid often feature multiple compartments, including a freezer section for long-term storage at even lower temperatures, and sometimes specialized drawers for produce or deli items. They come in various sizes and configurations to suit different household needs, from compact single-door models to larger side-by-side or French door units. Energy efficiency is a key consideration in the design of contemporary külmkapid, with many models rated for low power consumption. The primary function of a külmkapist is to maintain a consistent internal temperature, typically between 1 to 4 degrees Celsius for the refrigeration section and below -18 degrees Celsius for the freezer, thereby inhibiting the growth of bacteria and other microorganisms.
