Külgsidemetest

Külgsidemetest refer to lateral ligament tests performed in medical examinations, primarily to assess the stability of the knee joint. These tests are designed to detect injuries to the collateral ligaments, specifically the medial collateral ligament (MCL) and the lateral collateral ligament (LCL).

The MCL is located on the inner side of the knee, and the LCL is on the outer side. Damage to these ligaments, often caused by direct blows or sudden twists, can lead to instability and pain.

The primary test for MCL injury is the valgus stress test. During this examination, the physician applies a valgus force to the knee while attempting to open the medial joint line. Excessive laxity or pain indicates a potential MCL tear.

For LCL injuries, the varus stress test is employed. In this procedure, a varus force is applied to the knee, aiming to open the lateral joint line. Increased laxity or pain during the varus stress test suggests an LCL injury.

These tests are typically performed with the knee in both extension and flexion. Testing in extension can reveal more significant instability as the cruciate ligaments offer less support in this position.

The results of külgsidemetest are interpreted in conjunction with the patient's history, other physical examination findings, and potentially imaging studies like MRI, to arrive at a diagnosis and guide treatment.
