Kõrvatillad

Kõrvatillad is a term used in Estonian to refer to ear mites. These are tiny parasitic arachnids that commonly infest the ears of mammals, particularly cats and dogs. The most prevalent species affecting pets is *Otodectes cynotis*. These mites live in the ear canal, feeding on earwax and oils. Their presence causes irritation and inflammation, leading to symptoms such as head shaking, scratching at the ears, and a dark, crumbly discharge that can resemble coffee grounds. The infestation can sometimes be visible to the naked eye as tiny white specks moving in the ear.

Diagnosis is typically made by a veterinarian who examines a sample of the ear discharge under a microscope to identify the mites. Treatment usually involves ear cleaning solutions to remove debris and mite eggs, followed by the application of topical or oral medications that kill the mites. It is important to treat all pets in the household, as ear mites are highly contagious among animals. Without treatment, ear mite infestations can lead to secondary bacterial or yeast infections, and in severe cases, potentially cause damage to the ear. Prevention often involves regular ear cleaning and monitoring for any signs of discomfort.
