Kõnekodeerimine, also known as speech coding, is the process of digitally representing speech signals. It involves converting an analog speech waveform into a digital stream of bits and then compressing this stream to reduce the amount of data required for storage or transmission. This is crucial for efficient communication systems like mobile phones and voice over IP (VoIP) services.

The goal of kõnekodeerimine is to achieve a good balance between the quality of the reconstructed speech and the bit rate, which directly impacts the bandwidth needed. Different coding techniques exist, broadly categorized into waveform coders and vocoders.
