Kääntämistekniikat, or translation techniques, refer to the various methods and strategies translators employ to transfer meaning from a source text to a target text. These techniques are crucial for ensuring accuracy, fluency, and cultural appropriateness in the translated work.

One common technique is literal translation, where words and grammatical structures are translated as closely as possible to the original. However, this often leads to unnatural or nonsensical sentences in the target language, requiring more nuanced approaches. Equivalence translation aims to achieve the same effect or meaning in the target language, even if the wording differs significantly. This is particularly useful for idiomatic expressions or cultural references that do not have a direct equivalent.

Transposition involves changing the grammatical category of a word without altering the meaning. For example, a verb in the source language might become a noun in the target language. Modulation, on the other hand, changes the point of view or perspective, such as translating an active sentence into a passive one, or vice versa, to better fit the target language's conventions.

Adaptation is used when a concept or situation in the source culture is entirely unknown in the target culture. The translator then creates a new, analogous situation that the target audience can understand. Compensation is applied when a loss of meaning or stylistic effect in one part of the text is compensated for elsewhere to maintain the overall impact. Finally, omission is the deliberate removal of a word, phrase, or even a whole passage if it is deemed redundant or irrelevant to the target audience. The choice of technique depends on the text type, purpose of translation, and target audience.
