Käyttöakselit is a Finnish term that translates to "drive axles" or "axles" in English. In the context of vehicles, a drive axle is a component of the drivetrain that transmits power from the differential to the wheels. It is a crucial part responsible for turning the wheels and thus propelling the vehicle.

There are several types of drive axles. In vehicles with rear-wheel drive, the rear axle is the drive axle. For front-wheel drive vehicles, the front axle serves as the drive axle. Four-wheel drive and all-wheel drive vehicles typically have both front and rear drive axles, and sometimes an additional transfer case for distributing power to both. The drive axle is generally a robust assembly, often containing a differential which allows the wheels on the same axle to rotate at different speeds, a necessary function when turning.

The internal components of a drive axle include gears, bearings, and shafts. The shaft itself, often called a half-shaft or driveshaft, connects the differential to the wheel hub. These components are designed to withstand significant torque and stress. Maintenance of drive axles is important for vehicle longevity and performance, typically involving checking lubrication levels and inspecting for wear or damage.
