The structure of a user-agent string can vary, but it typically includes keywords indicating the browser's name (like Chrome, Firefox, Safari) and its rendering engine (like Gecko, WebKit). Operating system information, such as Windows, macOS, or Linux, is also commonly present. Developers and website administrators can analyze user-agent strings to understand their audience's technical landscape, aiding in development and troubleshooting.

However, user-agent strings can also be a privacy concern. Because they can uniquely identify a user's device and software configuration, they have been used for fingerprinting. To mitigate this, browser vendors are exploring ways to reduce the amount of identifying information included in user-agent strings, such as through user-agent client hints, which provide a more controlled and privacy-preserving way for servers to request specific information. The ongoing evolution of user-agent string handling reflects a balance between website functionality and user privacy.
