Käyttäjäagenttina, often translated as "as a user agent," refers to the software that acts on behalf of a user in a network environment, most commonly on the World Wide Web. The most prevalent example of a user agent is a web browser, such as Chrome, Firefox, or Safari. When a user navigates to a website, their browser sends a user agent string to the web server. This string contains information about the browser, its version, the operating system of the user's device, and sometimes other details like the device type.

Web servers use this user agent information for various purposes. It allows them to tailor the content or functionality of a website to the specific user agent. For instance, a website might serve a different version of its pages to a mobile browser compared to a desktop browser, optimizing for screen size and capabilities. It can also be used for analytics, helping website owners understand the types of devices and browsers their visitors are using. Additionally, user agents can be bots, such as search engine crawlers (like Googlebot), which also identify themselves with a user agent string to indicate their purpose. This mechanism is fundamental to how the internet functions, enabling communication and content delivery between clients and servers.
