Kätepesemist, also known as handwashing, is a fundamental hygiene practice that involves cleaning the hands with soap and water to remove dirt, germs, and viruses. This simple yet effective method plays a crucial role in preventing the spread of infectious diseases and maintaining overall health. The technique is widely recognized as one of the most important ways to protect oneself and others from illness.

The process typically begins by wetting the hands with clean, preferably warm water. Soap is then applied, and hands are rubbed together vigorously for at least 20 seconds, ensuring all surfaces—including between fingers, under nails, and the backs of hands—are thoroughly cleaned. After rinsing off the soap, hands are dried with a clean towel or air-dried. Using a towel or hand dryer helps reduce the risk of recontamination by preventing germs from spreading back onto clean hands.

Kätepesemist is particularly important before handling food, after using the restroom, after coughing or sneezing, and after touching surfaces that may be contaminated. Regular handwashing is especially critical in healthcare settings, where it helps prevent hospital-acquired infections. The World Health Organization (WHO) and other health authorities emphasize its importance in public health guidelines.

While soap and water are the most effective for removing dirt and germs, hand sanitizers containing at least 60% alcohol can be used as an alternative when soap and water are unavailable. However, sanitizers should not replace handwashing when hands are visibly dirty or greasy. Proper hand hygiene is a simple yet powerful habit that contributes significantly to reducing the transmission of illnesses in both personal and communal settings.
