When exposed to air, the iron powder undergoes an oxidation process, releasing heat. Another category includes reusable hand warmers. These can be made of metal or plastic and contain a solution, often sodium acetate, which can be heated and then slowly cools down, releasing heat. Some reusable hand warmers require boiling to reset the solution, while others utilize a small metal disc that, when bent, initiates a crystallization process that generates heat. Electric hand warmers are also available, powered by batteries, and can be recharged for repeated use. These offer adjustable heat levels and convenience.
