Kälteaustauscher, also known as cold exchangers or refrigeration heat exchangers, are devices designed to transfer thermal energy from a colder medium to a warmer medium, effectively cooling the warmer substance. This process is fundamental in many refrigeration and air conditioning systems, as well as in industrial cooling applications. They are a specific type of heat exchanger where the primary objective is to remove heat from a fluid or gas.

The fundamental principle behind a Kälteaustauscher is the second law of thermodynamics, which states that heat naturally flows from a hotter body to a colder body. In a Kälteaustauscher, this natural tendency is harnessed and controlled. The cold medium, often a refrigerant or chilled fluid, flows through one set of channels or tubes, while the warmer medium, the substance to be cooled, flows through another. Heat is then transferred across a separating wall, typically made of a highly conductive material like copper or aluminum, from the warmer to the colder medium.

Common configurations for Kälteaustauscher include shell and tube designs, where the refrigerant flows through the tubes and the warmer fluid circulates around the shell, or plate designs, consisting of a series of thin plates with alternating channels for each fluid. The efficiency of a Kälteaustauscher depends on factors such as the surface area of heat transfer, the temperature difference between the fluids, and the flow rates. Proper design and maintenance are crucial for optimal performance and energy efficiency in the systems they are part of.
