Käivitussüsteemi

Käivitussüsteemi, often translated as starting system or ignition system, refers to the collection of components in an internal combustion engine that initiates the combustion process. Its primary function is to turn the engine over and bring it to a speed where it can sustain its own operation through the combustion cycle. Without a properly functioning käivitussüsteemi, the engine would not be able to start.

The core of the käivitussüsteemi is typically an electric starter motor. This motor receives electrical power from the vehicle's battery and, through a mechanism like a Bendix drive, engages with the engine's flywheel or flexplate. The engagement causes the crankshaft to rotate, turning the pistons within the cylinders. Simultaneously, other systems, such as the fuel system and ignition system, are activated to deliver fuel and generate a spark, respectively.

The battery serves as the energy source for the starter motor. The ignition switch, also known as the key switch or start button, controls the flow of power from the battery to the starter motor. In modern vehicles, this process is often managed by an electronic control unit (ECU) that orchestrates the precise timing of fuel injection and spark generation once the engine reaches a sufficient speed. Issues with the battery, starter motor, solenoid, or ignition switch can all prevent the engine from starting.
