Käivitamismehhanism refers to the system or device used to initiate the operation of an engine or motor. In internal combustion engines, this is typically achieved through an electric starter motor, which engages with the engine's flywheel to turn the crankshaft and begin the combustion cycle. For larger engines, such as those found in ships or industrial equipment, pneumatic or hydraulic starting systems might be employed. These systems use compressed air or hydraulic fluid to rotate the engine.

In electric motors, the starting mechanism is often simpler, involving a direct electrical connection to power the motor. However, depending on the size and type of motor, various starting methods may be used to limit inrush current and protect the motor and the power supply. These can include reduced voltage starters, soft starters, or variable frequency drives (VFDs). Reduced voltage starters lower the voltage supplied to the motor during startup, thereby reducing the initial current draw. Soft starters gradually increase the voltage and torque, providing a smoother and more controlled start. Variable frequency drives control both voltage and frequency, allowing for precise control over motor speed and torque from zero to full speed, offering the most flexibility and energy efficiency.
