Kytkentäjärjestelmät, or switching systems, refer to the interconnected networks and technologies used to establish and manage connections between different points in a communication network. These systems are fundamental to the operation of telecommunications, the internet, and various other electronic communication methods. Essentially, a kytkentäjärjestelmä determines how data or signals are routed from a source to a destination.

There are broadly two main types of switching systems: circuit switching and packet switching. Circuit switching, historically used in telephone networks, establishes a dedicated, continuous path for the duration of a communication session. Once the connection is made, it remains open until explicitly broken. This ensures a guaranteed quality of service but can be inefficient if the line is idle. These packets travel independently through the network, potentially taking different routes, and are reassembled at the destination. This offers greater efficiency and flexibility.
