Kysyntähäiriöillä, known in English as demand disorders, refers to a group of psychiatric conditions characterized by disturbances in a person's ability to control their desires and impulses related to specific behaviors or substances. These disorders are not about a lack of willpower but rather a complex interplay of genetic, biological, psychological, and environmental factors.

Common examples of demand disorders include substance use disorders, where individuals compulsively seek and use drugs or alcohol despite negative consequences. Gambling disorder, characterized by an inability to stop gambling even when facing financial ruin, is another well-recognized demand disorder. More recently, behavioral addictions such as internet gaming disorder and compulsive shopping disorder have been identified and studied.

The core feature of these disorders is a persistent and often escalating focus on obtaining and engaging in a particular activity or consuming a substance. This leads to a preoccupation that interferes with daily life, responsibilities, and relationships. Individuals may experience withdrawal symptoms, such as irritability or anxiety, when they try to stop or reduce their engagement. While the specific triggers and manifestations vary, the underlying mechanism often involves the brain's reward system, which becomes dysregulated. Treatment typically involves a combination of psychotherapy, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy, and in some cases, medication to manage co-occurring conditions or withdrawal symptoms. Support groups also play a crucial role in recovery.
