Kynäkovuuskoe

Kynäkovuuskoe, known in English as the pencil hardness test, is a method used to determine the resistance of a surface coating to scratching. It is a common quality control measure in industries such as paints, coatings, and plastics. The test involves applying a series of standardized graphite pencils of varying hardness grades to the surface of the material under a controlled pressure. The pencils are drawn across the surface, and the softest pencil that can scratch or gouge the coating is identified.

The pencils are graded according to a scale from softest (9B) to hardest (9H), with intermediate grades like F and HB. For example, if a coating can withstand scratching from a 2H pencil but is scratched by a 3H pencil, its hardness is reported as 2H. The test is typically performed using a specialized jig that ensures consistent pressure and angle of the pencil against the surface, minimizing variables that could affect the results.

The kynäkovuuskoe is a relatively simple, inexpensive, and quick test. It provides a standardized way to compare the scratch resistance of different coatings or to ensure a particular coating meets a specified hardness requirement. While it doesn't measure absolute scratch resistance in terms of force, it serves as a practical indicator of a coating's durability against everyday abrasion and scratching.
