Kylmäkäynnistysautomatiikka, often referred to as cold start automation, is a system designed to manage the startup of a vehicle engine when it is at a low temperature. This automation aims to optimize the combustion process and protect engine components during the initial stages of operation. When a vehicle has been stationary for an extended period, especially in cold weather, the engine oil becomes viscous and may not adequately lubricate moving parts. Additionally, fuel can condense on cylinder walls, leading to incomplete combustion and increased emissions.

Kylmäkäynnistysautomatiikka typically involves several integrated functions. It often includes adjustments to the fuel injection system to ensure a richer fuel-air mixture, compensating for the fuel that may not vaporize effectively at low temperatures. Ignition timing may also be modified to improve combustion efficiency and reduce knocking. Furthermore, many systems incorporate idle speed control, raising the idle RPM temporarily to allow the engine to warm up more quickly and provide sufficient oil pressure.
