Kylmäoireet

Kylmäoireet, often referred to as common cold symptoms, are a collection of mild respiratory illnesses affecting the upper respiratory tract, primarily the nose and throat. These symptoms are most frequently caused by viruses, with rhinoviruses being the most common culprits. The illness is highly contagious and spreads through respiratory droplets released when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks. It can also spread through direct contact with contaminated surfaces.

Commonly experienced symptoms include a runny nose, nasal congestion, sore throat, cough, sneezing, mild body aches, and sometimes a low-grade fever. Symptoms typically appear one to three days after exposure to the virus and can last for a week to ten days, though some symptoms like a cough may persist for longer.

Diagnosis of kylmäoireet is usually based on the characteristic symptoms. There is no cure for the common cold, and treatment focuses on alleviating symptoms. Rest, adequate fluid intake, and over-the-counter medications such as pain relievers, decongestants, and cough suppressants can help manage discomfort. Antibiotics are ineffective against viral infections and are not prescribed for the common cold. Prevention strategies include frequent handwashing, avoiding close contact with sick individuals, and not touching one's eyes, nose, or mouth.
