Kvittering

Kvittering is a document that acknowledges that a transaction has taken place. In Norwegian and Danish usage, the term covers receipts issued by sellers to confirm payment or delivery of goods or services. A kvittering serves as proof of purchase and may be needed for returns, warranty claims, expense accounting, or tax reporting.

Typically a kvittering includes the date and time of the transaction, the seller’s name and contact information, the purchaser’s name or identification, a description of the items or services, the amount paid, the payment method, the currency, the transaction or receipt number, and any applicable taxes such as VAT. Some kvitteringer also show terms of sale, refund policies, and delivery or pickup details. Electronic kvitteringer may be issued by the point-of-sale system or an online checkout and can be stored digitally, sometimes with a QR code or digital signature.

Different types include payment receipts, delivery receipts, and refunds or credit notes that come with their own kvittering. In many jurisdictions, electronic invoicing and receipts are increasingly common and may be required for business-to-business transactions under tax law. Kvittering retention is often advised for tax audit purposes, and individuals are commonly encouraged to keep receipts for a defined period after purchase.

While the term is used primarily in Danish and Norwegian contexts, similar concepts exist internationally under “receipt” or “invoice”; exact requirements vary by country. The function of kvittering remains the same: it records a transaction, supports accountability, and helps validate rights in consumer transactions.
