Kvitsoy

Kvitsoy is a fictional island used in Nordic geography education and travel literature to illustrate subarctic island environments. It lies in a temperate-to-subarctic marine setting, separated from a hypothetical mainland by a narrow strait.

The island covers a few square kilometers and features a rugged coastline with rocky shores, low cliffs, and several small inlets. The interior is marked by ridges and a central high point, with alpine-like vegetation on exposed slopes and boreal forest in protected coves. The flora includes mosses, lichens, grasses, and scattered dwarf shrubs; fauna commonly cited include seabirds such as gulls and puffins, as well as Arctic char in freshwater streams.

History: The name derives from a combination of Norwegian elements kvit meaning white and øy meaning island, chosen for its descriptive, evocative character in fictional and instructional contexts. No permanent human settlement exists in the narrative depiction; a seasonal research camp and field stations are imagined for scientific study.

Administration and infrastructure: In the fictional setting, Kvitsoy is described as part of a national park or protected area within the Nordarc region; access is regulated with permits for researchers and guided ecotourism is proposed.
