Kvanttitietoverkkojen (Quantum Networks) are a type of communication network that leverage the principles of quantum mechanics to transmit information. Unlike classical networks, which use bits to encode data, quantum networks use quantum bits, or qubits. Qubits can exist in multiple states simultaneously, thanks to a property known as superposition, and can be entangled with each other, allowing for complex interactions that are fundamental to quantum computing and communication.

Quantum networks have the potential to revolutionize secure communication. Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) protocols, such as BB84, use the principles of quantum mechanics to generate and distribute cryptographic keys. The security of QKD is based on the fundamental laws of physics, making it theoretically unbreakable. Any attempt to eavesdrop on a QKD transmission would disturb the quantum states, alerting the communicating parties to the presence of an intruder.

The development of quantum networks is still in its early stages, with several challenges to overcome. These include maintaining the coherence of qubits over long distances, developing efficient quantum repeaters to extend the range of quantum communication, and integrating quantum networks with existing classical infrastructure.
