Kuznetsk Basin, commonly known as Kuzbass, is a major coal mining region in southwestern Siberia, Russia. The basin straddles the Kuznetsk Alatau mountains and lies largely within Kemerovo Oblast, with smaller parts in neighboring areas. It is one of the largest coal basins in the world, containing extensive deposits of high-volatile bituminous and coking coal. The basin’s principal urban centers include Kemerovo, Novokuznetsk, Mezhdurechensk, Leninsk-Kuznetsky, Prokopyevsk, and Tashtagol.
