Kuumemittareissa, often translated as fever thermometers, are devices used to measure body temperature. Their primary purpose is to detect elevated body temperature, a common indicator of illness or infection. Various types of thermometers exist, each with its own method of measurement and application.

Contact thermometers are the most common. These include mercury-in-glass thermometers, though their use has declined due to safety concerns. Digital thermometers are now widely used, offering quick and easy readings. They can be placed under the tongue (oral), in the armpit (axillary), or in the rectum (rectal). Rectal temperatures are generally considered the most accurate for infants and young children.

Non-contact infrared thermometers, also known as temporal thermometers, have become increasingly popular, especially in clinical settings and during public health crises. These devices measure the infrared heat emitted from the forehead or temporal artery without physical contact. Ear thermometers, another type of infrared thermometer, measure the temperature within the ear canal.

The accuracy of a kuumemittari depends on its type, proper usage, and calibration. Factors like environmental temperature, recent activity, and the method of measurement can influence the reading. It is important to follow the manufacturer's instructions for each specific thermometer to ensure reliable results. Normal body temperature can vary slightly between individuals and throughout the day, but a significant deviation, particularly an elevation, warrants attention and potentially medical consultation.
